PSD2: How online payments will change in the EU

All you need to know!

From the 14th September 2019, the European Union will enforce a new directive that will make online payments more secure, this will be called PSD2. We welcome this change as our priority is to keep all data safe and all transactions transparent, reliable and trustworthy. The Central Bank of Ireland is in favor of a smooth transition period, this means that they are not enforcing it on every Bank as of now. Feel free to check with your bank about when they will start to enforce it.

Find out you what this means for you and the payment process with FREE NOW.

To fulfill the directive, we need to enable your bank to check your identity when you are using your credit card to book a taxi. This identity check from your bank is called 3D Secure and will be required every few payments. This may make the payment process a little longer. There will be instructions for you to follow on your screen.

Are you using your company’s business account?

Most business credit cards will not be affected. However, if an identity check is triggered during a trip and you can’t fulfill it, please contact the person administrating your company’s account. They will need to contact their bank. In the meantime, please switch to a different payment method.

What do I need to do?

Your bank will ask you to prove that you are indeed the cardholder. The bank-required identity check can occur in different ways.

It will consist of one of these:

Your pre-determined password or PIN

A one-time code sent to your phone

Your fingerprint or face recognition

When do I have to do the identity check?

When you’re registering a new credit card on the app. You will also be checked every few payments/online transactions.

This only affects credit card payment. Other payment methods like PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay (and of course cash payments) are not affected.

What will happen?

There will be a screen pop-up from your bank with clear instructions on how to pass the identity check.

This example shows an identity check in the FREE NOW app for passengers with an SMS-code. The actual identity check will vary from bank to bank and therefore, will look slightly different in the app.

General questions

What will 3D Secure look like on my business account?

3D Secure can come in three forms. A predetermined password or pin, a one time code sent to your phone, or a fingerprint and or facial recognition. This is determined by your bank provider, we suggest you contact your bank to learn more about how 3D Secure will work for you.

The card on my account is not in my name, it belongs to my boss. Can I no longer order on our business account?

We would recommend that you contact the card-holder for when authentication is needed. We understand this is not always feasible and would advise that the card holder contact their bank for a better solution.

What can I do to make the authentication succeed?

We recommend you follow the instructions provided by your bank regarding 3D Secure and PSD2. We also recommend you to make sure that the information registered with your bank is up to date (phone number, address, email address etc..).

If my company account uses my employers card and I can’t authenticate, how do I pay for my trip?

If an identity check is triggered during a trip and you can’t fulfill it, please contact the person administering your company’s account, as they will need to sort it out with their bank. In the meantime, please switch to a different payment method and pursue reimbursement from your company.
