Add your driving licence Add your driving licence
Before you can hit the road, you’ll need to add your driving licence. Validate it by following the instructions on screen before your first trip. It’s easy and only takes a few minutes. Plus, you’ll only need to do it once.
For safety reasons, you’ll need to have more than 1 year of driving experience. Please also note that currently MILES accepts the driving licence from the following countries. No worries if you haven’t found yours - we are working on increasing the list.
If you’ve already validated your driving licence with FREENOW for one of our other services, you’re ready to go :)
Find and unlock Find and unlock
Find the nearest MILES car on the in-app map, then slide to start your reservation. Make sure you are closer than 500m to the car, otherwise it might not recognise you (our apps are smart, but they’re not magic ;))
Once you slide, you’ve got 10 minutes to start your rental – that means it’s easy for you to cancel if you change your mind during that time. Bear in mind that after 10 minutes, your reservation will expire.
If you cancel and restart 3 times in one day, we’ll block you from MILES for 24 hours, so it’s a good idea to be ready to go when you start your reservation.
Once you’re next to the car and ready, tap “Start rental” and the car will be automatically unlocked. Jump in, follow the checks below and you’re good to go!
Getting road readyGetting road ready
Once you’ve unlocked, here’s what you need to check before hitting the open road...
- Check if your car has any marks or damages – this is super unlikely, but if it happens, slide the renting details card up from the bottom of your screen and contact the MILES team via the “Help” button.
- MILES cars are keyless (transporters in the ‘L’ category have keys) so they need some special treatment from your side – push the brake first and then press the “Start” button. The car will start and give you a little reassuring roar ;)
- That’s it! Mirror, signal and hit the road!
Safety is keySafety is key
- Be attentive: watch out for other vehicles, always be focused on and aware of your surroundings, traffic and pedestrians.
- Please obey local traffic and parking laws.
- Never drink and drive. If you need to get home after a drink or two, feel free to take a taxi or Ride instead – they’re in the first tab of the FREENOW app, whenever you need them.
- If an emergency happens on your way (we hope not, but forewarned is forearmed), please slide the renting details card up and contact the MILES team via the “Help” button in the bottom of the screen.
Park modePark mode
Want to make a stop for some shopping, a coffee break or simply enjoy the surroundings during your rental? No problem! You can put the car in park mode. Just turn off the engine, close all the windows and doors, open the FREENOW app and tap “Park” for the active rental on screen. Your car will be marked with a “P” sign on the map in the app.
But please avoid garages or underground parkings – you need an internet connection to lock and unlock the car.
When you’re ready to get back on track, simply tap “Continue” and you’re good to go!
Reduced rates apply while in park mode, so don't worry if you need to take your time :)

No additional charges, so any extra luggage (or passengers) can come with you, too.
MILES vehicles are easy to find in the special reserved fixed spots at Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt airports, where you can pick up or leave your vehicle.
Ending your rentalEnding your rental
To end your trip, park the car inside the business area marked on the map in the designated parking zone. Local authorities may charge you a fine if you don’t follow these parking rules, so keep an eye out for signs and notices.
Make sure you have an internet connection to end your rental - MILES cars should not be parked in underground garages or car parks.
Turn off the engine and check if you’ve taken all your valuables from the car. Close all the windows, trunk and doors. Open the app and tap the ‘End rental’ button.
You will see your cost split automatically on the app screen and we’ll send it to you later via email.
