The Deutschland-Ticket (also known as the 49-Euro-Ticket) is the successor of the 9-euro ticket, offered nationwide during the summer of 2022. In contrast to the 9-euro ticket, the German government is offering the Deutschland-Ticketpermanently. The goal of the ticket is to incentivise people to use more sustainable public transport options, instead of a personal car.
The Deutschland-Ticket allows you to use all means of local public transport from 1st May 2023 for €49 per month. The ticket is valid throughout Germany on all regular buses, subways (U-Bahn), trams, S-Bahn trains and local and regional trains (except ICE, IC/EC).
With a flat rate for regional transport, the Deutschland-Ticketsimplifies local transport faresby enabling travel across different German jurisdictions (with different tariff structures). It’s a strong argument for switching from the car to a climate-friendly means of transport.
The Jobticket has been a common andpopular employee benefitin Germany for companies who want to offer their employees tax-free and inexpensive transport - it’s also a sustainable alternative to the company car.
Previously, the Jobticket allowed employers to cover a percentage or all the costs of the monthly transport ticket in a specific region of Germany. For example, in Hamburg, users could travel on the local public transport operated by HVV and regional trains within the state (Bundesland) of Hamburg. The cost of a monthly transport ticket varied from region to region, but even with a company subsidy, it was more expensive than the new Deutschland-Ticket.
Now with the introduction of the Deutschland-Ticket, the old Jobticket has gotten an update. So what’s the difference between the Deutschland-Ticket and the new Jobticket?
The main differences between the Deutschland-Ticket and the Jobticket are flexibility and price.
Flexibility: The Jobticket has some restrictions for companies, such as aminimum order of 20, no easy cancellation, only valid on certain transport networks (which is a disadvantage for companies with several sites in different cities) and inflexible, as the ticket must be ordered at least one month before the start date.
It is also a paper ticket that must be returned in the event of cancellation. Aframework agreementmust be concluded between the company and the transport association to enable the Job Ticket to be used throughout Germany. The Deutschland-Ticket therefore has clear advantages over the Jobticket: as the Deutschland-Ticket isvalid throughout Germany, it is more suitable for companies with several sites. It offers more flexibility, as the ticket can be used for one month and easily cancelled for the following month. It is also now a digital ticket, which is easy and sustainable for companies and employees to manage.
Cheaper for everyone: The Deutschland-Ticket is even cheaper than the previous Jobticket. The federal and state governments and transport associations grant an additional discount of 5 per cent (€2.45 per month) on the regular price of currently €49 per month if the employer contributes at least 25 per cent (equivalent to €12.25 per month). This means that from May 2023, employees will pay a maximum of €34.30 per month for a travelcard and save 30 per cent of the cost.
Theonly drawbackis that while the Jobticket can be purchased for 1st class and long-distance ICE, IC and EC trains, the Deutschland-Ticket is not available for 1st class and long-distance ICE, IC and EC trains.
Offer your employees flexible mobility with the nationwide Deutschland-Ticket or as a discounted job ticket.
The previous Jobticket model remains in place and continues to offer all the familiar benefits. However, as mentioned above, there is now a new company ticket model, the Deutschland-Ticket, which allows you to travel throughout Germany with the new Deutschland-Ticket.
If you already offer your employees the Jobticket model, you can decide whether you want to give them a choice between the two or only offerone of the two options.
